Despite rumours of Microsoft revealing a virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) in the near future the technology giant has today revealed a very different type of HMD. HoloLens, as its called, is a see-through device that allows users to view and interact with holograms. The concept has already been met with praise from much of the technology industry, but what does Palmer Luckey, creator of the Oculus Rift VR HMD make of it?

Microsoft just wrapped up their big Windows 10 event, and the last announcement coming out of the sea of Windows 10 news was HoloLens. Has a cool name, but what is it? Its Microsofts vision for a virtual, augmented reality. Whereas folks like Samsung, Oculus Rift and Razer want to insert you into a virtual world detached from the one in which you physically exist, Microsofts instead looking to utilize the beautiful world you already have around you. HoloLens is a wearable that goes over your eyes, but it features a transparent holographic display that can project holograms, if you will, onto the surfaces and areas around you.

VRFocus- Many virtual reality (VR) experiences try to trick players brains as they attempt to convince them that they have stepped into another world. This week sees the launch of demo for a unique new VR adventure that instead lets players explore the brain itself. Russia-based indie developer Nival has launched this short experience, titled InMind VR, onto the Steam digital store on PC and Mac with support for both the first and second development kit versions (DK1 and DK2) of the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).

VRFocus- Even without the release of a consumer head-mounted display (HMD), there are a good number of unique virtual reality (VR) experiences out there. Developers have been busy creating everything from immersive videogames to films that put audiences in the middle of the action. Recently France-based creative agency Backlight Studio launched one of the most unusual VR experiences yet in Birdy King Land. This surreal CGI adventure is currently free to download for use with the Oculus Rift PC HMD.
